Three counties, one city

One City, Three County Veterans Offices

Most of Appleton lies in Outagamie County, but parts of the city fall in Calumet and Winnebago counties. Census estimates put about 2,800 of the city’s roughly 3,500 veterans on the Outagamie side, around 570 in the Calumet County part and about 140 in the Winnebago County part.

County veterans service officers work for the county you live in, so your street address decides where to start:

  • Outagamie County: the Outagamie County Veterans Service Office. Kaukauna, Little Chute, Kimberly and Greenville are Outagamie communities too.
  • Calumet County: Calumet has its own county veterans service officer, as every Wisconsin county does. WDVA’s Find My CVSO/TVSO directory lists the contact.
  • Winnebago County: the Winnebago County Veterans Service Office in Oshkosh, which also serves Neenah and the Winnebago County side of Menasha.

All three help with VA claims for free. WDVA Federal Claims Assistance, the state’s accredited claims section in Milwaukee, is another no-cost option, as are the American Legion, DAV and VFW.

A free case review with us adds a second opinion to that list. We look at your situation, explain what the VA is likely to want, and tell you honestly when your county officer is the better next step. You file, on your own or through an accredited representative. We explain the process so you know what you're walking into.

VA care and exams

The Bradley Clinic, Green Bay and Milwaukee

The John H. Bradley VA Outpatient Clinic on Tri-Park Way is about 3 miles from the center of Appleton as the crow flies, and it’s the VA clinic for the Fox Cities. VA Milwaukee health care runs it. The next clinic, Green Bay’s Milo C. Huempfner clinic, is about 28 miles away in a straight line and belongs to the same system. The nearest VA medical center is the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, about 89 miles off as the crow flies.

C&P exams follow the notice

The VA could book you at the Bradley clinic, at Zablocki, or with one of the contract examiners it hires, and the letter or call from the scheduler names the place. Treat the exam as part of your evidence: describe your worst days honestly, bring a medication list, and explain how the condition affects work and home life. Our C&P exam guide goes deeper.

Counseling close to home

The Green Bay Vet Center runs two satellites in the area, one at Fox Valley Technical College on North Bluemound Drive and one at the Winnebago County Human Services Center in Neenah, each with select services. The main Green Bay Vet Center is about 23 miles from Appleton, straight-line.

Guard in the Fox Valley

Veterans of the 2-127th Infantry

The Wisconsin Army National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment is headquartered in Appleton, and its armory there got a renovated heritage display in 2023.

Infantry time tends to show up later in a few places. Weapons ranges and vehicles are hard on hearing (see the tinnitus guide). Rucks, road marches and jumps out of vehicles wear on knees and backs. A Guard infantry career can also include federal mobilizations alongside years of drill, and the VA evaluates each stretch by the kind of duty it was.

Paperwork worth finding now

  • DD 214s for every federal mobilization
  • annual training and other active duty orders, with dates
  • line of duty determinations (DA Form 2173) for injuries on duty
  • sick call slips, aid station notes and your drill attendance record
  • contact details for anyone who saw an injury happen

If no line of duty paperwork exists, statements from people who were there can help show what happened and when.

FAQ

Appleton and Fox Cities Questions

Which county veterans office do I call if I live in Appleton?

It depends on which part of the city you live in. Most of Appleton is in Outagamie County, so most residents start with the Outagamie County Veterans Service Office. If your address is in the Calumet or Winnebago County part, use that county’s veterans service officer instead.

Where is the VA clinic in Appleton?

The John H. Bradley VA Outpatient Clinic is on Tri-Park Way, about 3 miles from the center of the city as the crow flies. It is part of VA Milwaukee health care.

Will my C&P exam be in Milwaukee?

It could be, but that isn’t automatic. The VA may use the Bradley clinic, the Zablocki medical center about 89 miles away as the crow flies, or a contract examiner. The notice tells you, and you can ask to reschedule if the date or place is a problem.

Is there a Vet Center in the Fox Cities?

The Green Bay Vet Center has satellites at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton and at the Winnebago County Human Services Center in Neenah, each with select services. Call the main Green Bay Vet Center for their hours.

I served with the 2-127th. Do drill-weekend injuries count?

They can. Injuries during inactive duty training are eligible when the record shows they happened on duty. A line of duty determination is the strongest proof, and statements from people who were there help when one was never completed.
