VA Tomah health care

Where La Crosse Veterans Get VA Care

La Crosse falls under the VA Tomah health care system. VA describes it as the Tomah medical center plus four outpatient clinics in western and central Wisconsin (Clark County, La Crosse, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids), and in 2025 said the medical center serves roughly 26,000 veterans across 18 counties in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

La Crosse VA Clinic

Look for it in the Valley View Mall Annex at 4000 State Road 16, about 3 miles from the middle of the city as the crow flies. It’s the only VA clinic VA.gov lists in La Crosse.

Tomah VA Medical Center

The system’s hospital, on East Veterans Street in Tomah, is about 38 miles away as the crow flies. Roads add to that, so leave room in the day if an appointment lands there.

La Crosse Vet Center, in Onalaska

The Vet Center carries the La Crosse name but sits at 910 2nd Avenue North in Onalaska, about 5 miles out as the crow flies. It offers free, confidential counseling in a non-medical setting, and it also runs the Wausau outstation plus satellites in Eau Claire, Menomonie and Osseo.

Your C&P exam

Exams can happen at the clinic, at Tomah or with a contract examiner hired by the VA. The notice you receive is the only reliable answer, so read it as soon as it shows up. If the date or place is a problem, use the contact on the notice to ask for a new slot instead of skipping it, because a missed exam can leave the VA deciding your claim from the existing file.

Fort McCoy

Trained or Served at Fort McCoy?

Fort McCoy is the Army post on Highway 21 between Sparta and Tomah in Monroe County, now branded the Total Force Training Center. Sparta is about 22 miles from La Crosse as the crow flies. The installation hosts the 88th Readiness Division headquarters, the 86th Training Division, the Wisconsin Military Academy, a Noncommissioned Officer Academy and regional training sites for maintenance and medical skills, so a great deal of Guard and Reserve training happens there.

Two things to know if any part of your service ran through McCoy:

  • Older records may say Camp McCoy. The post was renamed Fort McCoy on September 30, 1974. Paperwork from before that date uses the old name for the same place.
  • Your orders set the rules. An injury during annual training, a school or a mobilization is judged by the duty status on your orders that day. Keep those orders, any line of duty determination and the medical notes from that stretch together in one folder.

Hurt during a training rotation and nobody wrote it up? A statement from someone in your unit who saw it, paired with your own account of what happened and how it has affected you since, can carry real weight.

Free Claim Help in La Crosse County and Nearby

La Crosse County Veterans Services helps residents file VA claims without charging a thing. Sparta is in Monroe County and Viroqua in Vernon County, and each of those counties has its own veterans service officer; WDVA says all 72 Wisconsin counties do.

For Ho-Chunk veterans, WDVA lists the Ho-Chunk Nation’s tribal veterans service office in Black River Falls. WDVA’s Tribal Veterans Program, which works with tribal offices statewide, is another good place to start.

The state also runs WDVA Federal Claims Assistance, an accredited claims section in Milwaukee, and veterans groups such as the American Legion, DAV and VFW have accredited representatives in Wisconsin. VA states it plainly: what an accredited VSO representative does on your claim is always free.

Our free case review sits alongside all of that. It’s a phone or video conversation in which we look at your situation, explain what the VA weighs and point out what’s missing. If a county officer is the right fit, we’ll say so.

Find the line that sounds like you. Each link opens a fuller guide.

  • A first claim. Maybe the knees from years of rucking at McCoy finally caught up with you. An Intent to File can hold your effective date for up to a year while you gather records.
  • A rating that has fallen behind. The VA rates how you are today, so recent notes from the La Crosse clinic or a private doctor are what show the change.
  • A denial. Supplemental claim, Higher-Level Review or Board appeal, chosen by why the VA said no. Two of those lanes close a year after the decision, and the third keeps your original date only if you file within that year.
  • Toxic exposure. The PACT Act added presumptive conditions for burn pit, Gulf War and Agent Orange exposure. A turndown from before 2022 may deserve a second look.
  • Can’t keep a job. TDIU pays at the 100% rate when service-connected conditions keep you out of substantially gainful work.
