Milo C. Huempfner VA Outpatient Clinic
The VA clinic in Green Bay itself, on University Avenue. It belongs to VA Milwaukee health care, along with the VA clinics in Appleton, Cleveland, Oconomowoc and Union Grove.
Green Bay’s VA clinic reports to Milwaukee, roughly 104 miles away as the crow flies, yet the closest VA medical center by distance is in Iron Mountain, Michigan. We help Brown County veterans make sense of that for exams and evidence, by phone or video.

Care, exams and counseling for Brown County come from places that can sound unrelated. Here is how they connect, with straight-line miles from Green Bay.
The VA clinic in Green Bay itself, on University Avenue. It belongs to VA Milwaukee health care, along with the VA clinics in Appleton, Cleveland, Oconomowoc and Union Grove.
The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee heads the system Green Bay’s clinic is part of. VA says that system covers 17 counties in eastern Wisconsin.
In Iron Mountain, Michigan, running a separate system that covers 15 Michigan counties and 9 in northeastern Wisconsin. Its clinics include Rhinelander and Menominee, Michigan, about 2 miles from Marinette in a straight line.
On South Ashland Avenue, plus a Mobile Vet Center, with satellites offering select services in Appleton, Keshena, Manitowoc, Neenah, Oshkosh, Shawano, Sturgeon Bay and Waupaca. Counseling is free, confidential and held in a non-medical setting.
None of them by default. The VA prints the location on your exam notice, and it may be the Huempfner clinic, a VA medical center, or a contract examiner the VA has hired somewhere in the region. Don’t assume the exam will happen where you see your primary care doctor. Read the notice the day it arrives, and if the trip is a real hardship, call the scheduler listed on it about other dates or locations.
Brown County Veterans’ Services is the county’s free claims resource, part of the network of 72 county veterans service officers WDVA describes across Wisconsin. Officers there help residents apply for VA disability compensation and state benefits without a fee.
Tribal members have options close by. The Oneida Nation Tribal Veterans Service Office is in Oneida. In Keshena, the Menominee Nation and Menominee County share a veterans service office that also hosts a Green Bay Vet Center satellite.
At the state level, WDVA Federal Claims Assistance is an accredited claims section in the VA regional office building in Milwaukee, open to walk-ins on weekdays. That’s a long way from the bay, but there’s no need to make the trip. DAV, for one, says Wisconsin veterans can start a claim with their county officer and have DAV represent them.
Where we come in: a free case review gives you a frank read on your claim and which route fits it. If Brown County Veterans’ Services is the better match for what you need, we’ll say that.
Green Bay has a Marine Corps Reserve presence: a detachment of Bulk Fuel Company B, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, which was part of the June 2025 training at Fort McCoy. Over in Door County, a Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay boat crew answered a rescue call in July 2025.
If your reserve time involved fuel, solvents or loud pumps and generators, write down where and when, and roughly how often. Later claims for hearing problems or exposure-related conditions need dates to stand on, and your own account of the work counts as evidence.
Reservists run into the same proof problem Guard members do. Injuries from a drill weekend are claimable when there’s a record, so collect your orders, any line of duty paperwork, and your drill attendance or points record. Orders for annual training matter if an illness, not only an injury, started during that time.
Coast Guard veterans, active or reserve, file VA disability claims on the same terms as the other branches.
By Census estimates, roughly 13,400 veterans live in Brown County and about 4,700 in the city of Green Bay. Groupings below use straight-line miles from Green Bay.
Outside Green Bay itself, Howard has the most veterans on this list, roughly 1,800 by Census estimates. Wherever you live in the area, the conversation happens by phone or video.
Starting out. A first claim rests on a current diagnosis, something that happened in service, and a medical link between the two. File an Intent to File early so the date is protected, then build the file. More in the first claim guide.
Getting worse. The VA rates what your condition looks like now. Recent treatment notes from the Huempfner clinic or a private doctor showing the change are the backbone of a rating increase.
Turned down. A Supplemental Claim with new evidence, a Higher-Level Review for an error, or a Board appeal. Which one depends on why the VA said no. See what to do after a denial.
Exposed overseas. The PACT Act added presumptive conditions for burn pit, Gulf War and Agent Orange exposure, so a claim that failed years ago may now qualify.
Out of work. When service-connected conditions keep you from holding a steady job, TDIU can pay at the 100% rate. The VA disability calculator shows where your combined rating sits today.
Only if the exam notice sends you there. The VA may schedule you at the Green Bay clinic, at a medical center, or with a contract examiner. Check the notice as soon as it arrives, and ask about another date or place right away if the trip is a hardship.
VA assigns each clinic to a health care system, and the Huempfner clinic sits in Milwaukee’s. Iron Mountain’s medical center is nearer as the crow flies, about 89 miles against roughly 104 to Milwaukee, but it runs its own separate system.
The Oneida Nation Tribal Veterans Service Office in Oneida, and Brown County Veterans’ Services. Both help with VA claims at no cost.
VA.gov lists the Green Bay Veteran Readiness and Employment location on Curry Lane as virtual care only, so plan on phone or video contact with that program.
